Special Opportunities for your Troop
You can customize the Camp Barton program to fit your troop by
taking advantage of the many special program opportunities for troops.
Select from one of the following, or come up with your own ideas:
Fine-tune your Scout cooking skills by cooking one or more
meals for your troop in your campsite.
- Arrange for a Troop Shoot or Troop Archery, or a troop session
on the climbing wall.
- Tour the Camp Barton Nature Trail, and learn about the great
outdoors.
- Take a walk up to Frontenac Falls, our own private
waterfall
- Teach a special merit badge of interest to your troop.
- Sail or canoe down Cayuga Lake to Taughannock Falls State Park
(pronounced "tawGANuck"). Pack a dinner and cook out there,
then hike up the gorge to Taughannock Falls itself - at 300 feet clear
drop, it's one of the highest falls east of the Rocky Mountains. For a
longer hike, go around the gorge on the upper trail.
- Visit one of the area attractions over breakfast or lunch
(provide your own transportation). Go fossil hunting in Ithaca or
Lansing, take an early trip to watch the birds at Montezuma National
Wildlife Refuge or the newly renovated Cornell Sapsucker
Woods Laboratory, visit the Sciencenter
or Cornell University.
The
Paleontological Research Institute (PRI) has a brand-new "Museum
of the Earth" not far from Barton.
- Take a day hike or overnight hike on the Finger Lakes trail.
- Take the COPE course at the Cayuga Nature Center. Note: This
is given by CNC, and is not a BSA activity. Contact them at
607-273-6260 for costs and time.
- Orienteering: The Syracuse Orienteering Club has set up some
orienteering courses that will challenge any Scout's map and compass
skills. Experience the fun and learn the skills of this very popular
European sport.
- CIT PROGRAM: Looking forward to becoming a Camp Barton staff
member? If you are fourteen or more years old, at least a First Class
Scout, and will be spending at least one week at Camp Barton with your
troop this summer, you can develop your leadership skills by working
as a Counselor-In-Training with the Camp Barton Staff for an
additional two weeks. CITs who successfully complete the two-week
course will receive special consideration for staff positions in
future years. Applications are available at the Council Service
Center, P.O. Box 66, Binghamton, New York 13903.
