NASH, WILLIAM - Age, 22 years. Enlisted at Otto, to serve three years, and mustered in as private, unassigned, August 20, 1863; no further record.

NELSON, HOLMES R.-Age, 20 years. Enlisted, October 21, 1861, at Middleburg, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. I, October 22, 1861; discharged for disability, January 13, 1863, at Carver Hospital, Washington, D. C.

NELSON, JUDSON C.-Age, 37 years. Enrolled at Cortland, to serve three years, and mustered in as surgeon, November 11, 1861; discharged, July 10, 1862.
Commissioned surgeon, January 17, 1862, with rank from October 11, 1861, original.

NELSON, NAPOLEON B.-Age, 21 years. Enlisted at Cortland, to serve three years, and mustered in as corporal, Co. G, November 25, 1861; returned to ranks, no date; died of disease, July 1, 1862, at Washington, D. C.

NEWBRY, FLOYD.-Age, 43 years. Enlisted October 2, 1861, at Cortland, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. D, November 6, 1861; discharged at Washington, D.C.,  for disability, April 1, 1861.
Newbry's discharge certificate (in Mike Brown's collection) says he was 5'6" tall, dark complexion, grey hair and eyes, and by occupation a Farmer. He was born in Orange County, New York. No reason was given for his discharge. 

NEWELL, JOHN F.-Age, 21 years. Enlisted, October 18,1861, at Milford, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. H, October 19, 1861; transferred to Invalid Corps in January, 1864.

NEWKIRK, JOHN.-Age, 44 years. Enlisted, December 1, 1861, at Milford, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. H, December 4, 1861; discharged for disability, April 12, 1862, at Fort Massachusetts, D. C.;
Newkirk's discharge certificate (in Mike Brown's collection) lists him as 52 years old, 5'9" tall, dark complexion with blue eyes and grey hair, a Farmer by occupation. The reason for his discharge is given as "old age and disease of the lungs." At the time he was indebted to Gridley and Gault, Sutlers, for $3.00. 

NEWKIRK, WILLIAM.-Age, 17 years. Enlisted, December 1, 1861, at Milford, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. H, December 4, 1861; re-enlisted as a veteran, January 3, 1864; transferred to Co. B, January 1, 1865; to Co. D, One Hundred and Forty-seventh Infantry, January 28, 1865.

NEWTON, BURDETT.-Age, 21 years. Enlisted, October 16, 1861, at Groton, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. C, October 25, 1861; discharged for disability, January 16, 1863, at Emory Hospital, Washington, D. C.

NEWTON, JOHN.-Age, 23 years. Enlisted at Auburn, to serve three years, and mustered in as private, Co. K, July 23, 1863; transferred to Sixth Michigan Cavalry, October 8, 1863.

NEWTON, WILLIAM.-Age, 35 years. Enlisted at Watertown, to serve three years, and mustered in as private, unassigned, September 17, 1863; no further record.

NICHOLS, THOMAS.-Private, Co. G, Twenty-fourth Infantry; transferred to Co. K, this regiment, May 13, 1863; wounded in action, July 1, 1863, at Gettysburg, Pa.; transferred to Co. G, July 1, 1864; absent, sick, August 31, 1864; no further record.

NOBLE, CHARLES E.-Age, 38 years. Enlisted, September 21, 1861, at Truxton, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. G, October 9, 1861; deserted, September 14, 1862, at Frederick, Md.

NORCOTT, EPHRAIM M.-Age, 34 years. Enlisted at Conklin, to serve three years, and mustered in as private, Co. D, July 17, 1863; died of chronic diarrhoea, October 19, 1863, at Carver Hospital, Washington, D. C.

NORRIS, NEWTON B.-Age, 29 years. Enlisted, at Norwich, to serve three years, and mustered in as private, Co. G, August 28, 1863; discharged for disability, February 25, 1865, at Rochester, N. Y.

NORTHRUP, GEORGE L.-Age, 18 years. Enlisted, September 22, 1861, at Richford, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. E, October 4, 1861; promoted corporal, prior to April, 1863; wounded in action, July 1, 1863, at Gettysburg, Pa.; discharged for disability, December 11, 1863, at McDougal Hospital, Fort Schuyler, N. Y.

NORTHRUP, GEORGE W.-Age, 43 years. Enlisted, September 22, 1861, at Richford, to serve three- years; mustered in as musician, Co. E, October 4, 1861; promoted principal musician, January 24, 1862; discharged, to date October 14, 1862, at Washington, D. C.; subsequent service in Fiftieth Engineers.

NORTHROP, JOHN W.-Age, 27 years. Enlisted at Oswego, to serve three years, and mustered in as private, Co. F, September 8,1863; captured in action, May 5, 1864, at the Wilderness, Va.; paroled, December 12, 1864; discharged, June 19, 1865, at Annapolis, Md.   Northrop was imprisoned in Andersonville at one point. The following e-mail was received from John Guss, President Pierce County Historical & Genealogical Society: "We have a prison camp here in south Georgia in which at least one man of the 76th New York was imprisoned for a time while being evacuated from Andersonville. His name: John Worrell Northrop"

Additional Information: Northrop was indeed at Andersonville. In 1904 he privately published his memoirs as "Chronicles from the Diary of a Civil War Prisoner in Andersonville and other military prisons of the South in 1864". A copy of the book is in the collection of the webmaster of this site. 

At one point, he notes: June 29th, "Steps are taken to organize a police force. An order came from Captain Wirz that if we wished to take them, (the Raiders), outside, he would furnish a guard, we to point them out, and he would "clear the stockade", bully for the Captain."  

NORTHROP, MARTIN V. B.-Age, 20 years. Enlisted, October 24, 1861, at Georgetown, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. D, October 29, 1861; discharged for disability, February 17, 1863, at Convalescent Camp, Va.

NORTON, FRANCIS M.-Age, 25 years. Enlisted at Reading, to serve three years, and mustered in as private, Co. C, July 27, 1863; wounded in action, May 10, 1864, at Spotsylvania, Va.; discharged for disability, September 13, 1864, at Buffalo, N. Y.

NORTON, GEORGE H.-Private, Go. D, Thirtieth Infantry; transferred to Co. D, this regiment, May 25, 1863; wounded in action, July 1, 1863, at Gettysburg, Pa.; transferred to One Hundred and Twenty-third Company, Second Battalion, Veteran Reserve Corps, December 23, 1863.

NORTON, JAMES.-Age, 18 years. Enlisted, December 8, 1861, at Otego, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. K, December 25, 1861; discharged, July 22, 1862, at Falmouth, Va.

NORTON, PARMENAS A.-Age, 24 years. Enlisted, September 14, 1861, at Scott, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. D, October 4, 1861; promoted corporal, May 1, 1863; re-enlisted as a veteran, January 2, 1864; promoted sergeant prior to April, 1864; wounded in action, May 8, 1864, at Laurel Hill, Va.; discharged for disability, December 22, 1864, at Whitehall General Hospital, near Bristol, Pa.

NORTON, PERRY.-Age, 21 years. Enlisted at Cortland. to serve three years, and mustered in as private, Co. D, December 2, 1861; deserted, December 15, 1861, at Camp Campbell.

NORTON, WILLARD.-Age, 22 years. Enlisted, October 18, 1861, at Cortland, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. D, December 2, 1861; deserted, December 15, 1861, at Camp Campbell.

NORTON, WILLIAM D.-Age, 19 years. Enlisted at West Dryden, to serve three years, and mustered in as private, Co. C, October 15, 1861; died of disease, December 13, 1861, at Dryden, N. Y.
Major Grover CWRT member Conrad Bush writes:
"I think the first man of the 76th to die was William D. Norton, pvt. Co. C, who died on December 10, 1861 by testimony of Elias R. Weaver, MD. He came down with the measles on or about the 1st of December. He died at his home in Dryden, NY. I have not found as yet anyone who died sooner. According to Weaver an epidemic of measles broke out in camp at Cortland at this time. The Father's pension application was dated March 15, 1879. His father was Ebenezer Norton who married William's mother Feb 3, 1826 and she died May 18,1864."

NORWOOD, JOB.-Age, 21 years. Enrolled, October 9, 1861, at Richford, to serve three years; mustered in as corporal, Co. E, October 13, 1861; promoted sergeant, no date; wounded in action,, August 28, 1862, at Gainesville, Va.; re-enlisted as a veteran, January 2, 1864; mustered in as second lieutenant, Co. K, to date November 9, 1863; captured in action, May 5, 1864, at the Wilderness, Va.; paroled, no date; discharged, March 12, 1865.
Commissioned second lieutenant, February 17, 1864, with rank from November 9, 1863, vice T. F. Welden promoted.

NORWOOD, WESLEY.-Age, 19 years. Enlisted, September 24, 1861, at Harford, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. F, October 4, 1861; discharged for disability, March 19, 1864, at Culpeper, Va.
Norwood returned home and died May 19, 1864 - see his obituary

NOXON, ROBERT G.-Second lieutenant, Co. F, Thirtieth Infantry; transferred to Co. F, this regiment, May 25, 1863; wounded in action, July 1, 1863, at Gettysburg, Pa.; died of his wounds in September, 1863. Commissioned in Thirtieth Infantry.

NUGENT, JOHN.-Private, Co. F, Thirtieth Infantry; transferred to Co. K, this regiment, May 25, 1863; captured in action, May 6, 1864, at the Wilderness, Va.; escaped from Salisbury, N. C., April 12, 1865; transferred to Co. I, One Hundred and Forty-seventh Infantry, January 28, 1865.

NUGENT, WILLIAM.-Private, Co. F, Thirtieth Infantry; transferred to Co. K, this regiment, May 25, 1863; to Co. I, July 1, 1864; to Co. C, December 1, 1864; to Co. H, One Hundred and Forty-seventh Infantry, January 28, 1865.
